Join expert naturalists from Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary for a guided morning of birdwatching along Wequassett’s scenic shoreline. 

Take in the sights and sounds of ospreys, terns, herons, shorebirds, and songbirds. Learn about nesting behaviors, migration patterns, and the unique coastal ecosystems that make this area such an important wildlife habitat.

Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary 

Located near Wellfleet Harbor, Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is a 1,183-acre coastal preserve featuring salt marsh, woodland, and tidal habitats. The sanctuary offers walking trails, a nature center, and a campground, providing opportunities to experience the diverse landscapes and wildlife of Cape Cod.   

The sanctuary was established by Massachusetts Audubon Society, the largest nature-based conservation organization in New England, and works to protect wildlife, conserve and restore resilient landscapes, advocate for environmental policies, and provide nationally recognized education programs for adults and children.  Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary remains one of Cape Cod’s most treasured natural landscapes, offering a peaceful place to appreciate the region’s wildlife and coastal beauty.

David Shapiro

David Shapiro is a Senior Teacher Naturalist at Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, where he has been leading education programs since 2021. He guides a wide range of experiences—from early morning bird walks and kayak excursions to immersive, weekend-long field schools. David especially enjoys being out on the water and exploring the more remote corners of the Cape.

Mark Faherty

Mark Faherty has been the Science Coordinator at Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary since 2007. While his current projects involve everything from oysters and horseshoe crabs to bats and butterflies, he has studied primarily bird ecology for the last 20 years. Mark’s Weekly Bird Report airs each Wednesday on WCAI, the Cape and Islands NPR station. He also co-hosts Bird News, a monthly call-in show all about birds, on WCAI’s The Point with Mindy Todd.
