Best resort on Cape Cod? U.S. News and World Report says it’s this one

Key Points

  • Wequassett Resort and Golf Club was named the best resort on Cape Cod by U.S. News & World Report.
  • The resort also ranked as the 48th best in the United States and second best in Massachusetts.
  • Wequassett is the only resort in New England to hold a double Forbes five-star rating for both its resort and dining.

U.S. News & World Report has ranked Wequassett Resort and Golf Club as the best resort on Cape Cod; the second best in Massachusetts and the 48th best in the United States.

“We continue to climb in the rankings. I think we’ve always been number one on Cape Cod. Being in the top 50 in the country is an accomplishment,” said Gary Thulander, Wequassett’s general manager.

Thulander was general manager at Chatham Bars Inn from 2018 to 2024, where he helped earn the inn a Forbes five-star rating in resort hospitality. Two years ago, Thulander left Chatham Bars Inn to become regional manager for EOS Hospitality, overseeing Wequassett and the Red Jacket Resort properties on the Cape.

Wequassett Resort's twenty-eight Atlantic restaurant uses colors and textures for a dish that appeals to all the senses.

EOS spent $20 million over the past two years, refreshing rooms at Wequassett and Red Jacket, with decor updates and other amenities, Thulander said, but he thinks it is still the enhanced service that makes Wequassett the resort U.S. News and World Report named number one on Cape Cod

Wequassett Resort and Golf Club is on 27 acres overlooking Pleasant Bay. The resort’s 120 rooms are nestled in several buildings including the Hydrangea Cottage, named for the blue flowers that adorn Cape Cod gardens most summers.

A wall of windows in twenty-eight Atlantic, the fine dining restaurant at Wequassett Resort and Golf Club, shows a spectacular view of Pleasant Bay. US News and World Report recently ranked Wequassett the no. 1 resort on Cape Cod, no. 2 in Massachusetts and no. 48 in the USA.

Wequassett’s five-star dining

The resort features six restaurants – from fine dining at twenty-eight Atlantic (lowercase “twenty-eight” intentional) to the coffee shop, The Sill. Thoreau’s is a cozy pub that serves “craft cocktails, inventive shared plates, and the full twenty-eight Atlantic menu.” Outer Bar, LiBAYtion and The Verandahs are seasonal waterfront eateries.

Thulander said Wequassett has earned the only double Forbes five-star rating, for both resort and dining, in New England. The general manager and his team have also incorporated food into many of the experiences marketed at Wequassett Resort.

On April 10, the resort features “Wines of France: A Legacy of Elegance,” during which wine lovers will experience a tasting of “world-class wines of Burgundy, Champagne and the Rhone Valley” ($120) led by sommeliers and wine experts from the world-renowned La Paulée wine festivals.

The next night, Wequassett’s Executive Chef James Hackney teams up with Romain Paumier, executive chef of Michelin-starred Café Boulud New York and La Paulée sommelier Nikita Malhotra for “The Art of French Wine and Cuisine” ($234) for a four-course dinner paired with a flight of fine wines and the stories behind them.

Wequassett’s fewer rooms allow for more individual service

Thulander credited Wequassett’s top-ranking from U.S. News and World Report, the Forbes double five-star ranking and other honors to his team’s ability to anticipate guests’ needs and respond with individual touches.

One of the reasons he made the move from Chatham Bars Inn – a property of which he is still extremely proud and fond – was that Wequassett has just over half the 217 rooms at the inn.
